[Edit]A.R.Rahman's first composition in a movie after his successful attempts at commercial jingles, Roja is considered a contemporary classic today, and an album that serves as a yardstick to measure musical excellence. The thunderous percussions and soothing melodies used in the soundtrack set the standards for all Indian composers young and old. The successful soundtrack features a score and six songs: the pleasing "Chhoti Si Asha" and "Yeh Hassein Vadiyan," one patriotic song in "Bharat humko Jaan Se Pyaara Hai," and two expressive renditions of the title track by S.P. Balasubramaniam and Hariharan, respectively. The track "Rukmani Rukmani" takes care of the mass appeal of the album, with erstwhile pop sensation Baba Sehgal and Shweta Shetty doing the vocal duties. The song has a loud thumping feel and a pronounced use of percussion, and later became ingrained in pop culture. In 2005, Time magazine included Roja in the list of "10 Best Soundtracks" of all time.
