[Edit]This solid burst of indie rock from the Berkeley, CA-based Actionslacks chronicles mid-'90s slacker angst perfectly. All the classic elements are here: aimless jobs, self-loathing, lack of direction, and diminished expectations masked by a sarcastic front. The musical interplay between Tim Scanlin (guitars, vocals), Mark Wijsen (bass, vocals), and Marty Kelly (drums, organ) is tight and focused, especially shining through on the beautiful ballad "Space-Age Heart," the frantic "In Hysterics," and the closing instrumental, "Credits." Scanlin is at his sneering best on "A.C.R.O.N.Y.M.," a vicious and humorous diatribe against a certain well-known Bay-Area alternative rock critic. Too Bright, Just Right, Good Night is not for everyone's tastes. Its grim depictions of the "clock watcher through life" mentality wear a bit thin at times.
