With its belly dancer cover, Cha Cha Cha at the Sahara is likely to be one of the hardest Mardi Gras albums to find. Castellanos knows his way around the "Oriental Cha Cha Cha," however, so the search is rewarding. The title track certainly deserves to be heard and covered by other artists. "Merengara" is another of Castellanos' superior, vocal merengue creations, and "Go Away Mambo" completes a strong first side. Side two is a little less compelling but consistently good. "Mrs. Plito" features Castellanos on clarinet; "Time on My Hands" has vibes and leaves one wishing for more. This layout (hot first side and end tracks, lesser material and filler on side two) is typical of Mardi Gras albums. Like the other albums with all-Castellanos tracks, Cha Cha Cha at the Sahara shows off a very interesting, capable, underrated composing and arranging talent.
