Caroline Wampole and Kelleth Chinn are the masters of Big Soul, a band that began to rock around the California club scene during the '90s, but had to fly all the way to France to reach their due glory. They sound remarkably ingenious and artsy, and at some point can be compared to a kind of trashy version of the B-52's. Chinn, the groups' guitarist, gets the credits on most of their creations, mainly choosing to gaze the thrills of guitar flows, either on shuffling or chilling themes. Big Soul, their eponymous debut, sounds like a reckless dance party, offering clean funky pulses, but also flamboyant guitar revelations picked upon the purest roots of blues. Naturally dribbling on the mentioned blues/rock formula, they wonder upon lean jumpy themes such as "Hippy Hippy Shake" or "Sister California," or moody guitar demonstrations like "Give It Up" and "Shot of Love." Their French language song, "Le Brio," yet another shaky trip, proved to be the most valuable track on the record, rocketing the band to the top of the French charts.
