African rappers Bisso Na Bisso put in a great performance on Le 15 Mai, 1999. Performing the sort of alternative rap that Wyclef Jean made popular in the mid-'90s, the group has some of the most unique production and backing music of any hip-hop group in 1999. Their twist on the genre is very original, striking a similar chord as groups like Arrested Development, but with a sound and feel that is distinctly their own. The only problem is that the live environment compliments their sound, but not their vocals. The effect isn't extreme, but there is a distinct strength that is lacking from the rapping that seems more production related than anything else. Between the catchy songs and interesting music, there is more than enough to make up for it. Anyone curious to hear how other cultures interpret the rap genre should try to hear this — there is some great stuff to be found on this album.
