With at least one hit single under their belts, the members of Chalk Circle had to prove that it was no fluke. This time they became more serious and literate, even going so far as to name the new album for a snippet of lyrics adapted from a poem by Robert Frost. The first single was "This Mourning," a nuclear war ditty with a jagged guitar chug similar to that of "April Fool." The problem is that for every plus like the first single, there's a minus like the fittingly saccharine "My Artificial Sweetener." Some of the songs are fine enough, but they're weighed down with exceptionally earnest lyrics that haven't dated particularly well. An even bigger mystery is on the CD reissue of this album: Despite the inclusion of the surprise non-album hit "20th Century Boy" at the end of the CD reissue of The Great Lake, it's also added here — right in the middle, disturbing the album's flow. Weird.
