Details
[Edit]Chicagoan Charles Wilson keeps getting pegged as a blues singer, and while he does tackle the occasional straight blues piece, he is really a caught-out-of-time soul singer who sings more like Al Green than B.B. King. Unfortunately Wilson has also been saddled with middling material over the years, and he has yet to find that one song or groove that could define him and bring him some well-deserved public attention. This sampler drawn from his five albums for Ecko Records won't help much in that regard, either, since little here is particularly striking, although Wilson's singing is always impeccably fine. The powerful "Two Steps Behind" shows some of Wilson's potential, while "Over at Fannie Mae's" proves he can handle his own in a blues club, but even these cuts don't rise much above the ordinary as far as production goes. Someone needs to find this guy a batch of truly great songs and a good producer and then stand back and watch it happen.
