Tenor saxophonist Ellery Eskelin's music is characterized by a uniquely zany American sensibility, and this recording is no exception. Jazz Trash is one of his earlier efforts with collaborators Andrea Parkins and Jim Black. Parkins is stunning on accordion and sampler, where she can simulate the sounds of an organ or simply project deliciously disjointed lines. Black is one of the most underrated performers on the scene, with his eclectic, propelling percussion holding down the fort. These three make an unbeatable trio, easily able to sustain interest for 70 minutes of recording time. The nine tracks explore different aspects of their playing, ranging from very subtle, luxurious textures to wildly frenetic offerings. Since this recording, the trio has continued to produce some striking CDs, but this early effort clearly sets the pace.
