Originally released in 1998, Engrave's The Rebirth sounds like it could have just as well seen the light of day a decade earlier. Packed full of '80s thrash metal tendencies, this re-mastered edition straddles the worlds of death and thrash, relishing in the guttural vocals and thunderous drumming of the former, while proudly representing the latter with slicing, highly melodic guitar riffs and flashy, fleet-fingered soloing. Spliced together, these qualities make for a memorable disc, and standout cuts like "Minister's Nightmare," "Secrets of the Unknown," and the awesome "Raping the Earth" offer a welcome departure from the limiting trends and tired formulas prevalent in the late '90s.
