In spite of the tacky marketing gimmick (a tie-in with Marvel Comics), Wolverine Blues is one of the best death metal albums to date, helping to expand a rapidly stagnating genre. Entombed combine their heavily detuned guitars and brutal lyrics and vocals with classic rock and metal influences. The song structures owe more to traditional hard rock than to death metal, and instead of alternating between extreme speed and slowness, the band spends much of the album in a crushing mid-tempo groove. But even though the music here is more accessible to fans of traditional metal, the band is still heavier than anything even approaching mainstream. [Wolverine Blues was also released in a "clean" edition, containing no profanities or vulgarities.]
