The Virginia shoegaze-pop trio Eternal Summers switch it up with their third studio album, The Drop Beneath. Producer Doug Gillard of Guided by Voices and Nada Surf and engineer Louie Lino (also of Nada Surf) worked with the group in Austin, Texas; they concocted a variety of arrangements that bring out the band’s many strengths. Singer/guitarist Nicole Yun emphasizes a retro girl-group sound on songs like “Keep Me Away” and “Until the Day I Have Won,” while turning to the indie rock side with shades of sugary guitar pop on “100” and a heavier shoegaze phasing guitar flush on “Gouge.” For a leaner, new wave pulse without walls of impenetrable sound, “Never Enough” works off that summer feeling that Jonathan Richman swore would haunt us the rest of our lives. Touches of The Cure, R.E.M., Lush, Slowdive, Belle & Sebastian, and Helium all surface in these largely innocent-sounding indie pop songs.
