Isaiah Mitchell is an incredible guitar player who just gets better with every project. He’s played with Earthless, Howlin’ Rain, Drunk Horse, Saviours, Harderships, and Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound. He married the last band's organ player, Camilla Saufley, before the two formed Golden Void (named after a song from Hawkwind’s fifth album, Warrior on the Edge of Time). Golden Void’s eponymous 2012 debut opens like it was recorded in 1970. Armed to the hilt with antiquated gear, the band tracked these songs on two-inch tape through old microphones and a vintage recording console. Fans of Mitchell’s six-string space-rock shredding in Earthless will find an instant familiarity in the astral fretboard work that peppers “Art of Invading.” But Golden Void eschews lysergic soundscapes for the one-two punch of classic biker rock. “Badlands” rumbles like a less bluesy Groundhogs—especially with Mitchell’s Tony McPhee–inspired inflections. And with the hammering rhythms of drummer Justin Pinkerton and bassist Aaron Morgan (from Roots of Orchis and Eyes, respectively), songs like “The Curve” kick out the jams with steel-toed boots.
