When growing up on the Gulf Coast, young James Booker probably never imagined he'd one day be playing the Karl Marx Universitat in Leipzig, Germany, but that’s exactly where he was the night of Oct. 29, 1977. Booker always went over well with Germans, who recognized American authenticity when they heard it. The unvarnished honesty of “Life” is audacious enough, without considering that Let’s Make a Better World was the final LP produced in East Germany before the country sealed itself off from the rest of the world. “The needle is in so bad,” warbles Booker, “it looks like you been having fun.” Then he breaks into an inebriated scat. This is just one of many shows that prove how heroic Booker was, traveling to unknown places and delivering his raw and personal truth in the same form with which he'd deliver it to his closest friends back in New Orleans. In this context, Booker’s rendition of Curtis Mayfield’s “People Get Ready” isn't just a plea for political change or an affirmation of personal salvation—it's both.
