Details
[Edit]Brooklyn-based bard Jon Bell recorded 2012’s Are We Living Yet? at just 23. But these songs play with a seasoned wisdom, thanks to his hard work before its release. Besides being an active tunesmith, Bell has composed for film, dance, orchestras, and chamber groups in New York City. “Colors and Shapes (Prologue)” sets the tone, with moody piano playing under Bell’s ghostly, Thom Yorke-esque croon as female backing vocals, guitar, woodwinds, and string and horn arrangements slowly seep in. Folky fingerpicking follows in “Six Angels,” creating sunnier melodies as Bell whisper-sings intimate inflections in time with a lightly brushed snare drum. Bell stacks up woozy vocal harmonies in "Red," while lazy, West Coast–flavored harmonies give “Anniversary Song” an early-'70s AM radio soft-rock feel.
