A home recording of Tokyo's enigmatic Jon (solo, except for a few tracks during which Saito-San joins in on banjo), Smoke is a quirky album of "songs about a dog" sung in Japanese to the pumping of a simplistic organ. While the rough organ sounds are grittily unpretentious (Mr. Quintron and Frank Pahl come sporadically to mind), Jon's baby-voice vocals are... terrifying? Unwarranted? Charming? Indigestable? Certainly, the album has cult potential in that it will never appeal to most people; and certainly, Smoke is utterly unique.
