Mirrors the Sky

London-based singer/songwriter Lyla Foy turned a night home into her career. She’d collaborated with others but wasn’t satisfied until, under the alias WALL, she made “No Secrets,” which received immediate acclaim on the Internet and led to her signing to Sub Pop Records. “No Secrets” appears here in a “slightly updated form” but, more importantly, its template of sound led to the sparkling minimalism of Foy’s debut album, Mirrors the Sky. Here, her songwriting talents expand beyond the haunting simplicity of that fateful track. This self-produced debut lets the electro-pop of “I Only” and “Feather Tongue” match the shuffling introspection of “Honeymoon” and “Easy,” where Foy stretches into the world of Kate Bush (or is that Lana Del Rey in 2014?). Foy herself singles out Fleetwood Mac’s Christine McVie for the sweet, understated pop hook guiding the beautiful but static “Impossible.” However, influences aren’t everything. Foy finds her own voice throughout, and the tuneful heartbreak of “Someday” and “Warning” suggest that the records she has yet to make will reveal the answers we seek from this mysterious debut.
