Elapsed Time (Remastered Edition)

In the mid-'90s, sound artist Marc Behrens changed his ways, trading his analog sound processing equipment for a computer. More than a technological upgrade, this move also implied different forms of expression and a whole new way of approaching and conceiving music. Elapsed Time is the work of a grown-up artist revisiting his past interests. Not a nostalgia project, instead it shows a desire to push one's esthetic further by encompassing the previous ones. So Behrens went back to his analog works and field recordings from the '80s and early '90s and plundered, transformed, and recomposed them using his late-'90s digital techniques. The result will please both the fan (who will recognize some of the material now presented in very different contexts) and the newcomer. Saying the music allies the best of both worlds, the warmth of analog field recordings and the precision of digital manipulation would get very close to a cliché. Yet, there is truth in the assertion. Moreover, the military technology theme of the album empowers these lowercase sound art works with an aura of mystery. Featured are radio signals, motors, and many other sounds one associates (rightfully or wrongfully) with the subject, like mirage-keys that open no door but for a fugitive moment give the impression of a deeper, graspable meaning. Elapsed Time may be a bit self-centered on paper, but on disc it will interest anyone fond of Francisco Lopez or Bernhard Gunter. ~ François Couture, Rovi
