Details
[Edit]This album of solo oud music by French musician Marc Loopuyt is the third in a series. The first featured oud and percussion, while the second offered oud and other melody instruments. Half of the tracks were recorded in a church, while the other half were recorded in a country house at night with a different oud. Two of the pieces recorded in the church are accompanied by basic percussion played by Thomas Loopuyt (the oud player's son). These are a considerable relief from the rather abstract-sounding music of the first part of the album. On one of these two pieces, "Nakriz Turki," Loopuyt's roots as a flamenco guitarist shine through a bit, as they do on all the pieces played on the second, more powerful lute. Of course, this is not surprising given the deep connections between the Iberian guitar and the oud.
If you can get past the first two-thirds of this oud extravaganza, you're in for a real treat. The first third is for the hardcore audience only.
