Marshall Chapman has been making music since the '70s, and the South Carolina singer is still in fine voice and sticking with what she does best. A Bo Diddley beat greets the Todd Snider duet of "Love in the Wind," while a slashing Rolling Stones shuffle keeps up her cheeky side for "I Don't Want Nobody." Two covers—Hoagy Carmichael's "Nearness of You" and The Delmore Brothers' "Blues Stay Away from Me"—showcase her natural talents. They also give her band (Will Kimbrough on lead guitar, Casey Wood on drums, and bassist Jim Mayer) a chance to catch their breath from originals that range from the silly "Call the Lamas" to the serious dimming of the light on "Not Afraid to Die," where she figures she's lived past all the expectations she put upon herself in the title track. "Let's Make Waves" takes a country gallop with additional keyboards from co-producer Mike Utley. "Dreams and Memories" evokes a dark, western ballad worthy of Tom Waits.
