[Edit]Inspired by Roky Erickson’s horror rock, San Francisco’s Moon Duo open the Horror Tour EP with a title track built on a grinding organ, spooky vocals, and that magic combination of ‘60s guitar tones and tambourine. During the solo, twisted leads drip and melt all over a hypnotic riff. By the middle of the following jam, “Causing a Rainbow,” it’s evident that Moon Duo have graduated from creating spellbinding, repetitive drones to being able to pull catchy melodies from them—all while keeping the base of their music entrancing. At just more than 10 minutes, the impressive “Sickener” layers a comforting beat over undulating organ notes with oscillating waves of reverb, only to be interrupted by a big buzzing fuzz-guitar lead and distorted wah-wah swells. More Eno than Erickson, “Circle of Evocation, Pt. 2” is an ambient sculpture where a sampled loop of running water gets filtered through an analog phaser to massage the eardrums.
