Just like the other major representatives of the Mangue beat style, Nação Zumbi, Mundo Livre S/A has always mixed different musical styles very freely on their albums, and Carnaval Na Obra is no exception. On this album the band draws inspiration from a variety of genres, from samba to rap, punk rock, and drum'n'bass. The last track, "Comprosmisso de Morte," even sounds like something Mercury Rev could have come up with around 1995. The mixture of very different musical styles on the album can, at best, be perceived as exciting, but it can also give an incoherent and uneven impression. The best songs here are those on which the band decides to create something really original and new, as on the opening track "Alice Williams" and the strange and beautiful love song "Maroca." The general atmosphere of the record is quite melancholic and even somewhat chaotic. ~ Philip Jandovský, Rovi
