Details
[Edit]Os Mutantes have often been dubbed the Brazilian Beatles, and rightly so. Their recordings revolutionized Brazilian music, incorporating the best aspects of American and British psychedelic experimentalism while retaining a wholly Brazilian sense of soul and rhythm. At the time this was recorded many Brazilians considered even the use of electric instrumentation a sign of crass commercialism, so one can only imagine the horror experienced by the traditionalists upon hearing Os Mutantes’ confrontational blend of Bossa, Bach, and Beatles for the first time. Thankfully they had a powerful friend -- Jorge Ben, a forward thinking giant of Brazilian music -- who saw promise in the precocious young upstarts. Jorge Ben’s distinctive, heavily rhythmic guitar playing graces “A Minha Menina” and the influence of his adventurous spirit suffuses the entire record, injecting it with a soulful musical professionalism that's a welcome counterbalance to some of Os Mutantes’ wilder flights of experimental fancy. Os Mutantes’ debut recording is a classic in every sense of the word. To anyone looking to explore the mind-expanding world of Brazilian Tropicalia, begin your journey here.
