If Silent Sober and Sound was Outsmarting Simon's worthwhile entry into the world of emotive punk, the New Jersey-based outfit's follow-up, Stand Up Straight, has shown how much the band has grown in the two and a half years since its predecessor was hatched. More introspective and imaginative, the disc wins on most fronts, from Brian Maguire's big, forceful drums to Brian Kelly and Greg Roehrich's equally tenacious and expansive guitar lines. Somber, moody numbers like "Number Two" and "Thirty-Third and Lexington" give way to the muscular roar of "The Cusp of Carabella," but it's the pop-punk immediacy of "Flying or Falling" that will likely balloon Outsmarting Simon's fan base. Creative and melodic, songs like the rhythmic "The Low" and the intriguing, artful "A Fall in Slow Motion" enforce the allure and invention of a smart band on the brink of enormous popularity. ~ John D.
