Party Wolves

Named after Pasqual Pinon—a man known as “The Two-Headed Mexican" who was hired as a human oddity by the Sells-Floto Circus in the early 1900s—Pascal Pinon is an Icelandic indie-folk band comprising twin sisters Jófríður and Ásthildur. They're often compared to Tegan & Sara, but Pascal Pinon's 2012 EP Party Wolves opens sounding more like a female-fronted Seabear with a lo-fi aesthetic. “New Beginning” starts things simply, at just less than two minutes; Jófríður and Ásthildur sing in hauntingly congruent sibling harmonies over strummed guitar and bass. “Moi” displays their penchant for writing catchy melodies, this time trimmed in delicately picked arpeggios and whispery inflections sung in their native tongue. The sisters offer a reworking of “Kertið Og Húsið Brann,” stripped down from the version on their eponymous 2010 debut album. Taking a clever jab at The Happy Mondays’ “24 Hour Party People” (and perhaps the movie by the same name), “5 Hour Party People” shines above the rest with a beautiful contrast of breezy melodies sung over intricate arrangements. "Vandamál Úlfsins" closes with wispy guitars and a droning pump organ.
