It's always an unexpected bonus when an expertly crafted pop-jazz disc also has the new-agey capability to take your soul soaring, and keyboardist Paul Gilreath's flawless The Eyes of the Morrow weaves its spell in just such a lighthearted fashion. His masterful brew of ivory sugar and tasty synth colors (which both complement real strings and delve briefly into a tropical lilt) offers an array of hummable sights which range from moody film score grandeur to soft, percussive rock. Some pieces, in fact, like the sweeping "Destiny Rides Alone," seem like they were lifted from a soundtrack to a bird in flight. Others float in, while still others jam along for a Sunday afternoon ride along the coast. If you played a blindfold game, you might just think you've stumbled upon some classic, undiscovered David Benoit project, and we all know what his eclectic magnificence has meant to this genre. In many ways, Gilreath touches on that fusion-minded piano spirit.
