Bipolar Cowboy is, in almost every respect, a more lo-fi and punk-influenced release than most of the band's earlier work. By featuring the band's angular, scratchy side (and dropping some of the Southern riff-rock leanings that hampered Fire in the Hole), the record asks to be taken much more seriously than other releases, creating a trashier, more Southern counterpart to the riot grrrl acts of the Northwest. Judging by these standards, Bipolar Cowboy is the band's best release.
