Tragically, Poly Styrene died just as this album was being released. The young girl who brazenly lead X Ray Spex with her brilliant humor and fearless self-confidence (“I am a poser and I don’t care!”) turned away from the music scene for her self-worth and returned a mature woman who never lost her soul. She opens the album with “I Luv Ur Sneakers,” a hearty homage to vegan shoes. “Kitsch” throws up the electronic screens for a 1980s New Wave bounce. “Thrash City” kicks in the 1970s punk guitars. “No Rockefeller” adds her old reggae touchstones to a song about poverty. “Electric Blue Monsoon” is a spacey and stark piece addressing her Hare Krishna faith without getting preachy. “Virtual Boyfriend” skewers the internet age while gleefully taking part in the technology. The album is a thrilling modern success from a woman who has never been more than a cult hero. However, it’s her stubborn adherence to her own way of doing things that made her so special. Styrene had her cake and ate it all the way to the end. R.I.P.
