While trying their best to dodge the comparisons through the use of a variety of instruments and angles, inevitably Reubens Accomplice's album, I Blame the Scenery, will most likely find itself thrown in the same circle as much of the Promise Ring's material. Unfortunately, blatantly ripping of said band's choruses won't help them in their cause to distance themselves from said band. If anyone can listen to "Looking Forward" on I Blame the Scenery and then listen to Promise Ring's song "A Picture Postcard" and not hear the same structure to the chorus (and even some of the same words), then you're obviously deaf. And while the rest of the album feigns from ripping off the rest of the Promise Ring's back catalog, the band doesn't stray too far from that girl-friendly emo-pop stuff that seems to explore the friendlier side of the genre. None of this is done poorly, however. In fact, Reubens Accomplice are quite able musicians and have produced a well-crafted album for fans of pop hooks and catchy beats.
