In 2016, Sofi Tukker introduced themselves to the world with their debut EP Soft Animals—a quick collection of genre-defying fun. On their second EP, DANCING WITH THE PEOPLE, the duo—comprising singers and producers Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern (Sophie + Tucker = Sofi Tukker)—continue to prove why they’re such a good time. Hawley-Weld showcases her Portuguese-speaking skills on “Swing” and continues her flex by engaging in some Portuñol back-and-forth on “Playa Grande.” On “Like This,” Hawley-Weld recognizes that the power of her voice goes beyond just singing, proclaiming, “Speaking in absolutes may be destructive, may be stupid/But I have a voice, and I’m gonna use it.” The storytelling on songs like “Fantasy” and “Ringless” is more somber than on others, but the atmospheric loops on both tracks keep the sound on DANCING ON THE PEOPLE consistent.
