Stephen Brodsky's debut is certainly a long way from his time in Cave-In. And even with Cave-In's change in style and direction, Brodsky's music still stands in stark contrast. Although ten songs in length, the album is relatively short, clocking in at under 25 minutes. This release is certainly more pop in nature than anything previously attempted by Brodsky. The most striking thing about Expose Your Overdubs is the huge Guided by Voices influence displayed both with Brodsky's voice, and in his approach to pop music. Taking short bursts of melodicism and fusing it with a British-inspired croon à la Robert Pollard serves to make the songs successful, albeit somewhat derivative. Further experimentation and changes of the pop structure could most certainly help, although they might do so at the risk of making Brodsky out to be even more of a Robert Pollard clone.
