Details
[Edit]Released in 1980, In 'n' Out is the first of three Stone City Band albums that Rick James produced in the early '80s. The albums were meant to show what James' backing band could do on its own, although they were hardly albums that the SCB recorded independent of James — in addition to producing them, the Buffalo funkster did a lot of writing and co-writing. So not surprisingly, In 'n' Out ends up sounding like a Rick James album, although a Rick James album in which members of the SCB take most of the lead vocals. Only on the sweaty "Little Runaway" is James featured prominently as a lead vocalist — other songs find SCB members like Levi Ruffin Jr. and the Colored Girls (Lisa Sarno and Jackie Ruffin) handling the lead vocals. Clearly the best song on the LP, "Little Runaway" is a gem that should have been a major hit. The rest of the songs (which ranges from funk numbers like "Strut Your Stuff" and "Party Girls" to the romantic slow jam "Havin' You Around") are decent and enjoyable, although not mind-blowing. This LP is only recommended to James fans who consider themselves completists.
