Details
[Edit]If you’re at all familiar with the ramshackle blues-punk of the late-‘90s act Dura-Delinquent, it’s hard to believe that the band’s two main players, Philipp Minnig and Nicolas Dobbratz are the backbone behind Sugar & Gold — both groups are great at what they do, but what they do is diametrically different. Crème grooves clean and hard on clubby dance-floor anthems rooted in late-'70s disco, old-school funk, libidinous R&B that would make Prince blush, and elated synth-pop. “Do It Well” is so schooled in old school funk, you could play the tune next to some video projections of classic break-dance/graffiti footage and nobody would be the wiser that this tune was cut in 2007. “Workout” is a straight-up party jam built specifically for sweating it out like Studio 54 never closed down, while “Neighborhood” radiates sunny, synth-y, pop melodies that invoke images of SoHo, N.Y.C. back when Keith Haring graffiti dotted the streets and everyone wore day-glo accessories.
