Humming (feat. Dijkstra)

On Humming, Dutch and Canadian modern jazz artists coalesce for a series of ethereal and at times invigorating compositions by saxophonist/digital EFX expert Jorrit Dijkstra, here performing with guitarist Ron Samworth's Canadian Talking Pictures quartet. This 2000 release encompasses six compositions and one group improvisation; many of these works share similar characteristics, whereby the overall tone and demeanor of the project might be akin to a multi-part opus. Djikstra and trumpeter Bill Clark commence the proceedings with warm, subtly stated unison choruses atop Samworth's daintily executed ostinato lines, as the musicians pursue climactic motifs and contrasting themes enhanced by cellist Peggy Lee's strong harmonic relationship with the soloists. Occasionally, the band melds free jazz interplay amid a few sequences of Ornette Coleman-style harmolodics, while the musicians also turn up the heat via hard boppish lines and complex time signatures on the piece titled "Call Me in a Minute." Otherwise, the band skillfully utilizes EFX as a vehicle to expound upon previously stated melodies and notions. Essentially, Talking Pictures is all about shrewdly concocted propositions and articulate ensemble work as the band surges forward in convincing and altogether inventive fashion.
