With the 1960s psychedelic movement came various pranksters, among them the ones at International Artists who decided to sell a fake live recording of the 13th Floor Elevators without the band’s consent. The songs on this 1968 album are actually studio recorded outtakes with overdubs of a canned audience’s cheers and screams. (This wasn't the first psychedelic "live record" fake. The UK’s John’s Children released Orgasm in 1967 — an album of studio demos with overdubbed applause “borrowed” from The Beatles’ movie A Hard Day’s Night.) Still, Elevators Live! makes for an awesome listening experience. It opens with a powerful cover of Bo Diddley’s “Before You Accuse Me” which along with a revved-up take on Solomon Burke’s “Everybody Needs Somebody To Love” showed that Roky Erickson and company could bring something new to the R&B and soul party. The danceable “Levitation” is a standout original and the punchy cover of Buddy Holly’s “I’m Gonna Love You Too” is one of the best versions of the song. A fiery rendition of “You’re Gonna Miss Me” saves the best for last, much like a real live show.
