The Budos Band distill their instrumental-only grooves from Fela-inspired percussion rhythms, horn-driven soul, and some Ennio Morricone soundtrack panoramas. The Staten Island band’s fourth album (and first in four years) pumps up Tommy Brennick's guitar, adding ominous psychedelic rock riffage to “Aphesia,” the blues-based “Magus Mountain,” and others. Those hoping for something closer to the past can turn to the horn-driven “Shattered Winds” or “Tomahawk.” Finding the common groove between Afro-funk and blues-based rock, Burnt Offering adds an interesting new wrinkle to the band's original vision.
