Details
[Edit]A remarkable vocal quartet who originated in Chicago in the late thirties, The Cats & The Fiddle were inspired by the tight group harmony sound pioneered by acts like the Mills Brothers, The Orioles and other East Coast acts, but were equally inspired by the minstrel and medicine show traditions of the deep south, a remarkable combination of influences that make The Cats & The Fiddle unique in the history of black popular music. Numbers like “Killing Jive” and “Left With The Thought of You” emphasize tight vocal work and subtle, jazz inflected chord progressions while the rustic “I’d Rather Drink Muddy Water” shows the group was thoroughly steeped in the blues traditions. Their stellar ballad “I Miss You So” eventually became a black vocal group standard and has been covered by Lee Andrews & The Hearts, Fats Domino, Little Anthony & The Imperials and countless others. Though the group continued to record throughout the ‘40s, this collection, focused on the group’s earliest recording for the BLuebird label, features the majority of their finest material.
