Serious rock 'n' roll fans know that few bands rocked as hard as the original incarnation of The Flamin' Groovies. The Ray Loney–era band was steeped in '50s-styled energy with a touch of raw blues thrown in to pace its sets. This album features 10 cuts from a radio broadcast of the Groovies' June 30, 1971, performance at the Fillmore West, during the legendary San Francisco club's final week. The final two tracks are from a 1970 show at another Frisco club, the Matrix. The sound quality is less than perfect, with a few tape dropouts. But the overall effect is positive, as it captures a loud, raw rock band playing, well, loud and raw. Chuck Berry's "Sweet Little Rock 'n' Roller," Randy Newman's "Have You Seen My Baby," Johnny Kidd's "Shakin' All Over," and Rufus Thomas' "Walkin' the Dog" were played with an authority few others could muster. Even a slow blues such as "I'm a Man" had an intensity that firmly established The Flamin' Groovies' reputation as one of the best bands of any era.
