Forget about the Phenomenological Boys being categorized as indie rock or even obscuro. This completely offbeat genre-crossing group (which includes at least one girl) is on the fringe of obscuro itself. It would be a chore to analyze what's going on here and who's doing what. This weird family affair (siblings Oliver and Angela Alden with high-school friend Dean Douglas) isn't unlike the Danielson Famile or the Shaggs in its odd approach to music. But this is much more eclectic. They don't want to stick with one genre, so they hop all over the place. Melody, Melody, Melody & More Melody goes from (what sounds like) show tunes to doo wop, from yodeling to folk. And the subjects of choice are just as peculiar. They wonder about how to kill off a pesky boy in "Let's Get Rid of Richard" and there's an ode to facial hair in "The Anti-Beard Song (Go Go Goatee)." It's a mystery as to what they're trying to accomplish. Nonetheless, these challenging outsiders are way out there.
