Details
[Edit]Singer/songwriter Travis Taylor offers his praise in intimate terms on his debut You Have Loved. This California worship leader constructs accessible, pop-based tunes with lyrics steeped in traditional hymnody. (In fact, “Love Divine” and “He Lives” are updated versions of time-honored hymns with original lines added.) Musically, Taylor seems to draw upon British rock inspirations (everything from Coldplay and Keane to Duran Duran), leavened by acoustic folk influences that link him with Jesus Music artists of the ‘70s. The chiming guitars and gliding tempos on “No One Who Compares,” “Fruit of Lips,” and “God of the Redeemed” radiate an irresistible shimmer. As a singer, Taylor combines a clear tone with emotive, slightly breathy phrasing. Though God is the overriding subject here, “Picture In My Mind” and “I Found Love” deal with the blessings of family as well. It’s easy to imagine that Taylor’s future albums will grow more sonically ambitious. Hopefully, he won’t lose the smaller-scale virtues and unaffected warmth displayed on his engaging first release.
