Like the first volume of this 1957 concert in Miami, this Woody Herman CD has a number of exciting performances, so long as the listener ignores the sonic defects, which include incomplete tracks, off-mic soloists and vocals, and wowing in the master tape, which was recorded using a single microphone. Unfortunately, the highlights are much fewer during this second set, which contains a mix of standards, obscurities, and even a couple of unidentified titles. Only one soloist is identified by name, trombonist Bill Harris, but his interpretation of "Where or When" is nearly ruined by the erratic sound from the often-wobbly master tape used as the source material for this CD. At least the second volume takes the time to list all of the musicians (unlike volume one), so it was evidently the label's hope that fans of Woody Herman would automatically buy both volumes. Given the slightly better sound of the first disc, that isn't necessarily a very safe assumption. This release is for obsessive Woody Herman collectors only.
