Biography
[Edit]Like other risk-taking groups that came out of Boston's experimental jazz scene of the 1980s and 1990s, the Boston Art Quartet (BAQ) has proved itself to be comfortable with both inside and outside forms of improvisation. The BAQ's inside/outside music is more daring and left-of-center than the traditional hard bop and post-bop that the "Young Lions" embraced in the 1980s and 1990s, but at the same time, its music isn't as far to the left as that of Anthony Braxton, Roscoe Mitchell or Henry Threadgill. The BAQ's members met in 1988, when they were students at the New England Conservatory. With David Reider on alto sax and flute, Christopher Washburne on trombone, Pedro Sarmiento on acoustic piano and the Malachi Favors-influenced Atemu Aton on upright bass, the BAQ took an approach that drew on "the tradition" (bop, swing and early post-bop) as well as the innovations of jazz's avant-garde and the AACM. In 1992, the BAQ recorded its CD The Fax for Accurate.
